The U.S. Open Championship is conducted yearly in June, bringing the world’s greatest golfers to new locations to play for the coveted U.S. Open Trophy. This year’s U.S. Open will be the 117th playing of the championship and will be the first in Wisconsin. Erin Hills in Erin, WI is located 35 minutes from downtown Milwaukee and is considered the 42nd Greatest course in the US. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (for many) brings vast excitement to corporations wanting to give clients, employees, and special guests an amazing experience, and with that is a need for great planners.
For 22 years, Mimi Griffin and her team at MSG Promotions have been at the forefront of Corporate Hospitality Programming for the U.S. Open. According to Griffin, client relationship building is key to today’s business, and the corporate hospitality programs allow corporate participants wonderful experiences, while also allowing for great face time with their guests.
The U.S. Open’s corporate hospitality program has seen extensive growth and this growth filters into the local economy of the changing locations. Griffin estimated a $130-$140 million benefit to local economies depending on the market. While business-to-business participants are the largest group arranging for these programs, Griffin was clear that packages can be of value to groups, even families, of all sizes. “For people who haven’t yet purchased hospitality, don’t go in with the assumption that you don’t have the budget. We have options from tables to tents and full-service participation. We have daily options and weekly options expanded for companies and individuals.” And the value is in the once-in-a lifetime, or at least a decade, opportunity. “It is the best in the world, in a unique environment for customer relationship building, employee time, or family gatherings,” said Griffin.
Advanced planning goes a long way. Griffin and her team host 200-300 clients a year and are working to sell hospitality for U.S. Open events up to three years in advance. Griffin gave a tip for planners, “Advanced planning is good for availability, but also to maximize your investment in customer relationship building. We provide a hospitality manual and conduct educational presentations to educate our corporate guests so they know exactly what they are getting in their package. We want to give our clients confidence in our program and that we can take care of their needs without any surprises. We have over 10,000 companies in our database and have collected feedback on best practices that we share with our new clients each year to make sure they are getting the best value from our program.”
For Griffin, the love of golf goes back many years, but she is excited with each new year. “A new location keeps it fresh. We may have a template, but each location has new opportunities…For me, I love the Midwest, because it is absolutely true that Midwest people are the nicest in the country and hospitality exceeds expectations.”
Golf outings are an enjoyable experience for all who participate, consider hosting a table or tent for your group at one of these outstanding events.
