• Featuring smoked ice and rye whiskey
• Crafting a twist on the Manhattan
Craft cocktails are in demand in even the smallest of markets. At the core of these creative selections are the classic drinks like Martinis and Manhattans. Taking a classic drink and crafting a twist that makes it both unique and memorable is one of the most creative ways the best of bartenders can share their talent.
Christopher Fenn, Bartender for Rye Restaurant located in the Copperleaf Boutique Hotel & Spa in Appleton, WI was looking for a way to bring the rich aromas from the Rye’s in-house smoked and cured meats into the bar. So the Smokey and the Bandit was formed. “The smokiness pairs naturally with whis key, so all I had to do was figure out how to round out the cocktail.” After developing a method to smoke ice, Fenn essentially made a twist on the classic Manhattan.
Smokey and the Bandit is perfect for any Wisconsin night.
It is strong and hearty while being a nice soft sipper.
Fenn, originally from the Fox Valley, has held every position in the service industry from dishwasher to manager. "Bartending wasn’t something I was passionate about when I first started, but quickly fell in love with the culture. I really enjoyed engaging customers for longer periods of time than being a server allowed. I wasn’t aware of ‘craft cocktails’ until I went to visit a friend in Chicago who was bartending at The Violet Hour. I watched him spend fi ve minutes, use three different bottles and two eye droppers to create the most complex beverage I have ever had. A light shown down from heaven, my head opened up, and I basked in the glow of cocktail consciousness.” Craft cocktails aren’t Fenn’s only passion though, when he’s not “behind the stick,” he enjoys spending time with his wife and two young boys.
