• X Games in Minneapolis, MN
• Three days of events like no other
• Metropolis partnerships make it happen
The official announcement came in July 2016, Minneapolis will host the summer X Games events for the next two years at the new, state-of-the-art U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis on July 13-16, 2017 and July 19-22, 2018.
If you know about the X Games, names such as Tony Hawk and Travis Pastrana may come to mind, but for those of you who don’t — X Games is the annual extreme sports event produced by ESPN. The inaugural event was held in the summer of 1995 and its popularity continues to gain momentum. In 1997, a Winter X Games was introduced and in 2002 the event began to be televised live, giving viewers around the world access to the best of the best in skateboarding, Moto X, BMX, and so much more.
“The X Games brings a very different kind of athletic competition to our community for residents to experience,” explained Melvin Tennant, Executive Director, Sports Minneapolis and CEO of Meet Minneapolis. “There was a very competitive bid process involving multiple cities. We started the process in November 2015, with a site inspection in February 2016, and an additional site inspection in June 2016, with ongoing conversations throughout.”
“X Games is not just one event, but multiple events, multiple types of sports, multiple locations, multiple requirements, and varying needs – it is much more than you might assume on the outset,” expressed Tennant. For three days, crowds will gather for an array of extreme sports competitions, from Skateboard Big Air to Moto X Best Whip, and X Fest, the concurrent sports and music festival which offers live music, autograph sessions with athletes, and interactive elements of fun. Tennant went on to say,“Finding venues and meeting all the needs has required very strong partnerships, regular communication, and a comfort level between ESPN and the Minneapolis community as we all strive to make this the best event possible.”
A great event takes a village, or in this case a metropolis. As planners, strive to align yourself with leaders, resources, and your community to help create your best event possible, each and every time.
