• DisruptHR invigorates HR meetings In November of 2016, the Brookings Area Human Resources Association (BAHRA) of Brookings, SD decided it was time to bring a DisruptHR event to their town and in January of 2017 the official planning began. Wendy Dailey, PHR, SHRM-CP led the planning committee. “We met every six weeks and did a lot of communicating via email,” Dailey stated. “The committee members really stepped up to take on tasks they wanted. I don’t feel like I micromanaged anyone, other than on the budget side. I think we played to people’s strengths and all learned a lot so next year will be easier.” What was the biggest challenge of the event? Dailey quickly responded, “Getting sponsors. This is a new event and we didn’t really have anything to share with local sponsors about what it would be like to be part of an event like this in Brookings.” The committee heard a few ‘maybe next year’ responses, but ultimately found sponsors who wanted to help promote the event. “We got the sponsors we did through several different methods: calling, emailing, social media, talking face-to-face with people we knew. We had a lot of committee members helping with sponsorship.” |
With a DisruptHR Brookings 2.0 on next year’s agenda, Dailey and the committee are looking at a few areas to improve for 2018. “One of the bigger things I’d like to figure out is how do we get more business leaders in the door,” Dailey expressed. “We are talking about accommodations, developing people, adapting to change, [all] things that affect supervisors at all levels.”
The Brookings Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) partnered with DisruptHR as part of the Brookings Area Workforce Conference. “It was wonderful to be able to collaborate and share ideas and resources,” Stacy Aesoph shared. Dailey enjoyed watching the event grow from an idea she had to a full-fledged event with a full house of interested people. Other committee members added to her thought. “My favorite part of filling in on the committee was getting to see the final product, the actual event in action,” stated Jennie Hegge, Brookings Chamber of Commerce Intern. “All of the speakers were awesome. I did learn a lot about HR and was entertained along the way. It was really a great event.”
