Julie Pingston, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and David Buckenberger, Senior Vice President of Business Development of the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau have earned the Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) designation, the only integrated executive program specifically designed for the destination marketing industry.

“Congratulations to those who have earned their CDME credential - the tourism industry's highest individual achievement." said Don Welsh, President and CEO of Destinations International. These leaders are now equipped with the knowledge needed to adapt and manage the increasing change and competition facing our industry.”

The focus of the program is on vision, leadership, productivity and the implementation of business strategies. It is designed to better prepare senior destination organization executives and managers to become more effective organizational and community leaders.

The Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau (GLCVB) is pleased to announce that President and CEO Jack Schripsema, CTA and Executive Vice President and COO, Julie Pingston, CMP, CTA were recently recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards by two different industry entities.

On May 23 at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan Meetings & Events magazine welcomed Schripsema into their Hall of Fame with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Cobo Center Obtains Recertification to International Green Meeting Standard

Cobo Center, site of this year’s Sustainable Brands (SB’17) conference, has achieved recertification to the ASTM Venue Standard, the premier global sustainability standard for the meetings and event industry. Cobo Center, Detroit’s main convention and exhibition venue and center piece of the downtown civic center was recently chosen to be the host site for SB’17, billed as the largest global convening of brand leaders and sustainability practitioners. 1,500 people from across the globe are expected to attend the May 22-25 event.

The 2017 Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration were presented at the April Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Detroit. The awards were presented by Dave Lorenz of Travel Michigan, representing the Michigan Travel Commission, and Julie Pingston, representing the Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan (TICOM).

The Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration were created by the Michigan Travel Commission, in conjunction with the Governor’s Office, to elevate the status of Michigan’s tourism industry and to promote innovative collaboration as an effective, efficient and creative operating principle for the industry. The inaugural awards were presented at the 2009 annual Tourism Conference.

Greater Lansing CVB and GLSA Announce Record Year-End Data and Award Winners for Community Support

The Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau (GLCVB) held its annual meeting on February 21st, and announced both good news for the local economy and recognized numerous individuals with awards for vision, dedication and loyalty throughout the year.

The Greater Lansing region experienced a 4.8% increase in year-to-date area lodging occupancy, setting a record high for the region at 64%, according to Smith Travel Research (STR) data. Additionally, the Greater Lansing region experienced a 3.4% increase in Average Daily Rate (ADR), or average cost per available hotel room. In 2016 ADR was reported at $101.82 compared to $98.28 in 2015. These numbers from 2016 show the fourth consecutive year that both overall demand for regional hotel rooms, and the rate area lodging partners are able to charge for them, both went up. A prime indication of a healthy hospitality and tourism market.

LANSING, Mich. – The Team Lansing Foundation, along with the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau (GLCVB) and the Tourism Ambassador Institute (TAI), are pleased to announce Malinda Barr, 2015 Greater Lansing Certified Tourism Ambassador of the Year, has been selected as the 2016 International CTA of the Year.

Malinda is the former Director of Sales at the Staybridge Suites Hotel, Okemos, MI and currently the Special Events Manager for the Lansing Lugnuts.

On behalf of the Committee, John Marks, past President & CEO of the San Francisco CVB, said, “Malinda, like all CTA of the Year winners, goes above and beyond what any guest might reasonably expect. Having grown up in the Greater Lansing region, she knows the community very well, but also utilizes all resources available to her, including quality material from the Greater Lansing CVB. The Townsend, known for its exceptional service and amenities, is one of only two Michigan hotels to receive the 2016 Four-Star Rating, and will be showcased with all of the Star Rating recipients on ForbesTravelGuide.com.

Greater Lansing CVB Announces Record 2015 and Award Winners for Community Support

LANSING, Mich. – The Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau (GLCVB) held its annual meeting on March 1, 2016, and announced both good news for the local economy and recognized numerous individuals for helping to foster meetings and events within the Capital Region.

The GLCVB announced that Mid-Michigan experienced a 4.6% increase in area lodging occupancy in 2015, posting a rate of 61.1%, up from 58.4% in 2014, according to Smith Travel Research (STR) data. The occupancy increase is particularly notable as it’s the first time in over a decade Greater Lansing occupancy has reached sixty percent or higher.

The Townsend Hotel Trades Furniture for Housing

Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, MI is going through a renovation and rather than tossing their tables and chairs they are choosing to generate some revenue for Habitat for Humanity.

The donated furniture will work to generate thousands of dollars for Habitat for Humanity.

The money made from the donations will go toward building materials and supplies for the creation of affordable homes for low to moderate-income families.

Cobo Center has been awarded the Keep Michigan Beautiful (KMB) President’s plaque, their highest annual award. KMB was founded in 1965 by then Michigan Governor George Romney as a response to Lady Bird Johnson’s White House Conference on Beautification. The President’s Plaque is awarded for environmental improvement, beautification, site restoration and sustainability. Patrick Bero, CEO/CFO of the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority, the governing body of Cobo Center, was on hand to receive the award October 16, 2015, in Frankenmuth Michigan.
“We feel Cobo Center offers a unique package of Green Event support at little or no cost to customers, in a place not known for sustainability – Detroit! We aim to change that perception and show the world that Detroit is back and better than ever,” said Thom Connors, SMG regional vice president and general manager of Cobo Center.
