Cobo Center Awards Naming Rights to Chemical Bank

Claude Molinari, general manager of SMG/Cobo Center, today announced an unprecedented partnership in Detroit. The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA) has awarded the naming rights of Cobo Center to Chemical Bank, the largest bank headquartered in Michigan. Chemical Bank and the DRCFA will announce the new name of the world-class convention center by the end of 2019, and the name will remain Cobo Center until that time.

“This unprecedented naming rights agreement is a great win for all parties. Chemical Bank makes a strong statement of commitment to the region and secured naming rights to a convention center that is growing in notoriety every day," said Claude Molinari, general manager of Cobo Center.

Cobo Center technology services revenue increases 58 percent over last year

Claude Molinari, general manager of SMG/Cobo Center, today announced that revenue for technology services in the facility was up 58 percent compared to last year, while WiFi remains free to visitors and events as a sales incentive.

“Facility-wide free WiFi in Cobo Center differentiates us in the market, and has been free of charge since the installation of the original network in 1997.” said Molinari. “The current 4G WiFi network and can handle 30,000 simultaneous users, although we frequently customize the system to accommodate events for higher usage.”

During the recent $279 million renovation, Cobo Center upgraded its technology services offering to include digital signage, a broadcast studio with a facility wide fiber network and a 10G Internet network built with an inherent 40G capacity.

The transformation of Cobo Center and downtown Detroit have occurred together since the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA) was formed in 2009 shortly before the City of Detroit's historic bankruptcy. Since then, the number of available downtown hotel rooms has grown to 5,384 with more slated to come online this year. The Siren Hotel in the Wurlitzer Building opened last month, the Shinola Hotel will be completed in October and the Element Detroit Hotel in December.

Claude Molinari, general manager of SMG/Cobo Center, today announced that Pure Detroit will occupy the retail space on the first floor of Cobo Center. The store will serve meeting and exhibit attendees, offering a full range of Detroit-centric products.

“A Pure Detroit Shop on the Cobo Center concourse, open for all events, will connect visitors from all over the world to the culture and hospitality of Detroit,” said Claude Molinari, general manager of Cobo Center. “It is another big step in making our customers feel that Cobo is ‘Centered Around You,’ and immersing them in our mission to deliver outstanding event experiences.”

Cobo Center Security formed a task force at the beginning of the latest rebrand and renovation, comprised of representatives from all safety and security agencies in Metro Detroit, the state of Michigan and the federal government. This task force includes the Detroit Police Department, Detroit Project Lighthouse, the Wayne County Police, Oakland County Police, Macomb County police, Michigan State Police, FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard and other interested parties. By leveraging technology resources, information and personnel records, a cooperative surveillance effort exists across the city 24/7/365 during events in Cobo Center.

Another successful NAIAS in Cobo Center puts more than 3,500 people to work

Claude Molinari, general manager of SMG/Cobo Center, today announced that more than 3,500 people were employed during the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Cobo Center.

Included in that total are all of the union employees that come into Cobo Center to work during major events for security, janitorial, food and beverage and the construction of the exhibits and displays.

Cobo Center completes $2M dollar wireless technology upgrade

Claude Molinari, general manager of SMG/Cobo Center, today announced the completion of a two million-dollar technology upgrade for Cobo Center. The work includes an upgraded Nortel core switch that distributes the WiFi signal and along with several new Nortel edge switches located throughout the center.

“For the visitors that use our WiFi network, these upgrades will be like moving from a one lane highway to a three lane super-speedway,” said Molinari.
