The UPS Store set to open in Global Center, Huntington Convention Center

The UPS Store is scheduled to open its doors for business inside the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland and the Global Center for Health Innovation, managed by SMG, on Monday, July 2. The UPS Store utilizes 1,100 square feet of space on the southwest corner of the first floor (Atrium level) of the Global Center and provides a variety of packing, shipping, freight, postal, printing and business services. The UPS Store will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Located in the heart of downtown Cleveland, The UPS Store is perfectly situated to provide a variety of office services to local business owners and the legal community in the adjacent Justice Center and to also provide valuable shipping options for thousands of convention exhibitors and attendees,” said George Hillow, executive director of the Cuyahoga County Convention Facilities Development Corporation (CCCFDC). “The CCCFDC and County leadership team carefully evaluated this amenity as we toured other facilities during the past two years and recognized a need for this type of service-oriented business in our building.”

Huntington Convention Center to open Art Gallery

The Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland and the Global Center for Health Innovation, managed by SMG, announced the development and opening of the Cleveland Convention Gallery, an exhibition space for local and regional artists located on the C2 Concourse in the Convention Center. The Cleveland Convention Gallery is located near meeting rooms 1 through 6, on the connector concourse overlooking Exhibit Halls A and B with a direct connection to the Hilton Cleveland Downtown.

“As a Cuyahoga County-owned facility, the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland belongs to the people and our mission in creating an art gallery is to honor the broad diversity, history, and significant momentum and growth in our community,” said Eileen Roth of Art Source, serving as the art consultant to the new Cleveland Convention Gallery.

Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland diverts 357 thousand pounds of trash in 2017

The Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland and the Global Center for Health Innovation, managed by SMG, diverted a total of 357,274 pounds of materials from the landfill during the past year, including 75,880 pounds of cardboard, 46,440 pounds of wood pallets, 18,480 pounds of mixed plastic, 14,780 pounds of mixed fibers, 10,000 pounds of glass, and nearly 9,000 pounds of bulk and shredded paper. These efforts diverted 49.1 percent of materials from the landfill as part of the building’s overall Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle program.

As a member of the Cleveland 2030 District, a movement to create high-performance building districts throughout Greater Cleveland with the goal of dramatically reducing the environmental impacts of building construction and operations, the facility reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1.26 percent in 2017, equivalent to taking 19 automobiles off the road for a year, and reduced its usage of electricity, water, and district steam heat.

Following in the footsteps of FirstEnergy Stadium, the Cleveland Indians, and JACK Cleveland Casino, the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland has implemented a large-scale food waste recycling system known as Grind2Energy—becoming the first and only convention center in the country to do so.

The concept is relatively simple: team members from on-site caterer Levy Restaurants load food waste and scraps into a disposal unit, which grinds up the food into a semi-liquid mixture that is stored in a holding tank. Collinwood-based Quasar Energy Group then transports the material to its anaerobic digesters, which extract methane to convert the waste into renewable energy (such as electricity, natural gas, or nutrient-rich fertilizer).

SMG, the convention center and facility management firm hired by the Cuyahoga County Convention Facilities Development Corporation (CCCFDC) to manage operations for the Global Center for Health Innovation and the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, recently signed on as a partner with the Cleveland 2030 District, a movement to create high-performance building districts throughout Greater Cleveland with the goal of dramatically reducing the environmental impacts of building construction and operations while increasing Cleveland's competitiveness in the business environment and increasing owners' return on investment.

SMG donates food, school supplies and recycles 381,000 pounds of trash

SMG, the convention center and facility management firm hired by the Cuyahoga County Convention Facilities Development Corporation (CCCFDC) to manage operations for the Global Center for Health Innovation and the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, recently completed its annual RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) report for the LEED Gold facility, resulting in more than 55.6% of trash recycled during the past year. Levy Restaurants, the facility’s exclusive food and beverage provider, donated more than 12,500 meals from leftover food to the Cleveland Food Bank. This aggressive food donation program allows SMG and the Cleveland Food Bank to turn leftovers and surplus food into thousands of nutritious meals for those in need through the Ed Keating Center.

Nursing mothers have a new sanctuary when attending conventions and meetings in Cleveland as the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland has installed two portable lactation suites for moms who wish to breast feed infants or use breast pumps in privacy.

"We are offering the new lactation suites during conventions, meetings, and trade shows to offer comfort and convenience for our guests," said Mark J. Leahy, general manager of the SMG-managed facility. "SMG is committed to providing a first-class experience for all of our guests at the Huntington Convention Center. The new lactation suites create a private sanctuary place within a public environment, enhancing our amenities for women and families."
