Rochester, MN’s expanded Mayo Civic Center is open for business

An exciting month is underway at Rochester, Minnesota’s newly-expanded Mayo Civic Center, with the first post-expansion convention being held in the center’s brand-new event suites on April 6-7.

“After more than two years of construction, we are thrilled that our beautiful new venues are up and running,” said Donna Drews, executive director of the Mayo Civic Center. The expansion nearly doubled the facility’s capacity for hosting events, Drews noted.

“We’re excited for clients, conference attendees, event-goers, and community members to see our transformation and use our new ballroom, event suites, meeting rooms, and outdoor Riverfront Plaza.”

State and city leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, March 19, 2015, for the expansion of the Mayo Civic Center, marking the beginning of the $79 million project, which will nearly double the size of the facility.

Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith addressed the ceremony attendees, who included Senators Carla Nelson and Dave Senjem, along with guests from the University of Minnesota Rochester, Rochester Community and Technical College, the Rochester School Board, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission, the Rochester Convention & Visitors Bureau; and leaders from the hospitality industry.

Work is underway on a $79 million expansion of the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minnesota, set to debut in 2017. When complete, the expansion will nearly double the size of the center’s meeting and event facilities, giving event planners countless new reasons to explore Rochester.

The expansion will bring the total amount of space at the Mayo Civic Center to more than 200,000 square feet—enough to host up to 2,000 attendees. A new 40,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom will offer a seating capacity of more than 4,000 people, a ceiling height of 32 feet, and high-end finishes to compliment any decorating scheme. A state-of-the-art kitchen and expanded food service facilities will also be included in the expanded Mayo Civic Center.
