Family-owned resorts provide warm welcomes and home-grown hospitality
McQuoid’s Inn, on Lake Mille Lacs in Isle, MN, was built in 1991 by Terry and Dusty McQuoid - a couple with a vision, two teenage sons, and a passion for fishing. The McQuoid family ran the successful fishing resort and event center for nearly fifteen years. After the loss of his beloved wife Dusty, Terry carried on the resort for another eleven years before retiring and selling McQuoid’s. Cindy and Tim Potoczny purchased McQuoid’s Inn and Events on September 1st, 2017. Much like Terry and Dusty, Tim has a strong passion for fishing, and Cindy has a heart gifted for hospitality and service. They have two children as well, Elizabeth, their 22-year-old daughter and Joey, their 2-year-old son.
Originally from the Chicago area, after raising their daughter in the hustle and bustle of the “city life,” the Potocznys decided they wanted to raise their son in the ‘Northwoods’ way of life. They spent years talking about owning their own resort. When the opportunity arose, they jumped at the chance to live their dream. When they saw all McQuoid’s Inn had to offer, they decided it was the place they wanted to be. The town of Isle is secluded and away from the large cities, but Cindy explained, “One seldom must travel more than a few miles, as the town has stores and options for all your needs.”
In addition to fisherman and outdoorsman, McQuoid’s Inn is host to a variety of small groups and events; from fundraisers and business meetings to retreats of all kinds. The large event center can accommodate up to 200 people, it also has a prep kitchen making it ideal for catered events. The cedar room is the smaller meeting space, it holds up to 60 people, and is perfect for more intimate gatherings.

McQuoid’s is open year round and offers a wide variety of activities for groups of any size. The Potocznys pride themselves on operating the three nicest launch boats on Mille Lacs; each boat can comfortably hold up to 30 people and all are equipped with top-of-the-line fishing equipment, clean bathrooms, and a propane grill. Whether it is fishing or a sunset dinner cruise, large groups have an option to stay together for a great time on the water. Located on 300 miles of groomed trails, McQuoid’s also provides ATV and snowmobile rentals which can entertain around 20 guests at a time.
For many people, their pet is part of the family. McQuoid’s Inn encourages bringing your pet; including having dog treats available at the front desk and special mats for food and water dishes to make pets feel special.
Another pet-friendly retreat is Justin Trails Resort in Sparta, WI. Back in 1985, Don and Donna Justin began the progressive transition from a dairy farm to an event retreat.

The next year they added bed and breakfast lodging with the enticement of ski trails the following year. “The cows were sold in 1996 and the machinery in 1998,” said Donna Justin, “We became innkeepers because it was a way for us to remain on our land in spite of depressed agricultural prices. We needed another way to make a living without going to the city for off-farm employment. Don and I have been full-time innkeepers ever since.”
The Little House on the Prairie log cabin, The Cottage (which had been a granary), and the Paul Bunyan log cabin were all built with Aspen logs from the property. A renovation to the dairy barn took place in 2013 transforming it into the Elegant Barn for parties and events. Currently, the first level of the barn is being renovated into The Studio, a place for yoga retreats, motor coach tour lunches after garden tours, and more intimate events. The Justins are open year round and have hosted corporate healthcare retreats, yoga retreats, and even Harley Davidson management retreats, just to name a few.
The lodging accommodations serve seven to 13 depending on preferences and a separate lodge is used for preparing and serving meals away from gathering/meeting spaces. Groups are treated to 200 acres of outdoor escape; 130 acres of woodland with hiking and snowshoe trails, three ponds, two disc golf courses, three acres of gardens, outdoor space for conversation, meditation, and a fire pit (with wood provided), not to mention the two llamas and Siberian Husky who call the property home.
If you are looking for an intimate retreat location to help your group unwind, declutter their minds, and unplug for a bit, the Midwest offers family-run, friendly resort options which will help you personalize your event and make lasting memories.
