Historic Resorts and Lodges
Across the Midwest, resorts and lodges of all shapes and sizes are found
As westward expansion moved people across the US and settlements were made, the upper class looked to outlying areas of beauty for rest and relaxation. Resort towns became a summer oasis to enjoy the ‘good life.’ From spa resorts and golf resorts to hunting and ski lodges, groups and families made time to get away, or vacation. Today these same resorts offer meeting planners exceptional venues to meet, relax, and play.
In 1845 the French Lick Springs Hotel, French Lick, IN, was built, drawing guests from as far as 100 miles away to lavish in the “miracle waters’ from the sulfur springs. Five years later, the Mile Lick Inn (now West Baden Springs Resort) was built one-mile away as a health resort. Over the years, both properties gained accolades and underwent expansive renovations and restorations to become the luxurious resorts they are today, offering spas, several dining options, and championship golf at both locations. French Lick Casino also offers entertainment.
The Lake Lawn Resort, in Delavan, WI, was built in 1878 making it one of the oldest resorts in the Midwest. The hotel was originally built as a residence for the Mabie Circus performers and over time became a golf retreat for wealthy Chicagoans looking to get out of the city. Today the resort offers 271 guestrooms, an 18-hole championship golf course, boat and water sports rentals, and so much more, along the two-mile Delavan Lake shoreline. Onsite dining, spa, and fitness only add to the plethora of beautiful outdoor opportunities for groups to enjoy.
Memories have been made since 1916 at the historic Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake, near Nisswa, MN. The property became part of the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979 due to the Main Lodge offering one of the most well-preserved examples of early resort log construction in existence. The property is home to multiple dining and golf experiences, as well as the Glacial Waters Spa.
Big Cedar Lodge’s remote setting, near Branson, MO, will make you feel you are much further than 10 miles from the city. Since 1921 this area has given solace to business tycoons and outdoor adventure seekers. Today guests settle into cozy log cabins nestled among the trees. The lodge offers a full-service marina with world-class fishing, golf, and miles of trails for walking, biking, and hiking, just to name a few experiences.
