• Loving a challenge
• Details on target
Born and raised in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, Kelly Kelly, an avid outdoorswoman, found her niche in the meetings and events industry while employed with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) and continues to excel along her career path, now at the Archery Trade Association (ATA), in New Ulm, Minnesota.
When Kelly isn’t planning, managing, or coordinating one of the multiple meetings or tradeshows she strategically oversees each year, you will find her enjoying time outdoors, baking, or listening to her favorite tunes.
Kelly Kelly: In my MN DNR research support role, I organized and coordinated meetings for biologists, managers, professors, and other wildlife professionals. The first national meeting I managed was for an advisory group of 10 leading professionals from around the country who met at locations throughout the USA. I realized I enjoyed handling everything including negotiating with the host property, arranging flights, ground transportation, catering, and hospitality needs as well as providing support for all the group meetings.
My first major event experience was the 2001 ATA Trade Show. I was on the job only two weeks when I was asked to travel to Indianapolis and assist in every way possible. Despite my lack of familiarity with the event, I fell in love with the challenges such a large event afforded me and the excitement I felt in helping attendees not only enjoy their experience, but feel the Show was a good business investment on their part. Looking back after 18 years, I’m proud of how much I’ve grown professionally and of how our team continues to serve the needs of our members through efficient and cost-effective event management.
MM: Tell us about yourself and your job.
KK: I provide support and assistance to ATA Board of Directors, board officers, and senior staff. I coordinate and manage small group meetings and conference calls. I enjoy coordinating the hospitality needs of our 2,000-plus member companies who attend the annual ATA Trade Show, a top 100 international tradeshow. In addition, I manage 15 to 20 meetings per year for the ATA Board, staff, members, many state and federal agencies, and other partner organizations. Most meetings range from 10 to 100 individuals, while the ATA Trade Show draws about 10,000 business professionals.
