In an industry dominated by women, Kristi Casey Sanders,CMM, DES, HMCC, and Director of Professional Development for MPI and others on MPI’s International Board of Directors clearly saw a gap. At the highest levels of business, even in the meeting and event industry, women were not seen as predominantly. Though there had been case studies, not a lot of reflection or interaction had taken place on the topic. “I wanted to create something I would want to take,” explained Sanders, and that’s exactly what she did.
A four-hour course has been developed to identify challenges women face in obtaining leadership roles and methods to overcome these challenges. The first hour of the session is based on data. “We put emotion aside and look at what the data tells us,” said Sanders. This data on women’s roles in leadership is different depending on the culture and country you are looking at.
Participants create connections with peers and discuss personal experiences. With peer-to-peer discussion the attendees work to assess their true strengths and take time for reflection. Each individual is set forth to create a 5-year action plan upon a 1:1 mentor experience. According to Sanders the action plan is a valuable piece of takeaway, as well as having a network of resources and accountability partners.
With four more Women in Leadership gatherings yet to be held in 2017, the next step Sanders sees is deciding how the global community of participants will stay engaged into the future.
